2006-2007 @ONE Scholars
Key Findings of the 2006-2007 @ONE Scholars
Executive Summaries for the 2006-2007 @ONE Scholars were compiled into a publication, which is available as a PDF download. Their research demonstrated that:
- When tablet PCs and wireless technology are used during classroom instruction to create an interactive learning network that allows real-time student assessment and assistance, student performance increases significantly, attrition is lower, attendance rates are higher, and students spend more time on assigned tasks outside class time.
- Virtual machine laboratories allow computer networking courses to be offered online, create an environment that is more flexible for student schedules, and result in the same level of student performance on exams, quizzes, and lab assignments as face-to-face courses.
- Online students in a music rudiments course that are assigned interactive online exercises are able to significantly improve their understanding of musical terminology, both between their own pre-tests and post-tests and in comparison to students in an identical on-campus class.
- Incorporating videocasts into online chemistry courses resulted in student scores jumping 11.2% higher than those who did not have access to these online lectures. Scores increased even more, to 21.8%, when students viewed videocasts that were targeted towards concepts on which students had previously tested poorly.
- Collaborative homework assignments, while complex to implement, may result in higher test scores and lower attrition in online algebra courses.
- GIS maps help students better apply economic concepts to real-world situations, particularly when implemented using homework assignments and follow-up discussion regarding one continent.
- Online psychology students linked their ability to perform online learning tasks with their perceived effort in the course, thus indicating that they may not persist in an online course if they are not confident using distance learning tools.
